What is linguistics?

Linguistics is the study of language in general, thus it is sometimes called General Linguistics. As the name suggests, it therefore does not deals with a particular language. Rather, it tries to find out the general attributes pertinent to language. In other words, we should differentiate 'language' from 'languages'.
The term 'language' refers to the general characteristics shared by any language in the world.
